Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a versatile plastic from the polyester family known for its light weight, strength and clarity. Products made from PET are marked by a “1” within a solid triangle – its resin identification code. This is usually found on or near the bottom of the product.

PET starts as a liquid monomer. It’s then made into a stable, solid polymer that is used to make cups and containers through thermoforming. The National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) provides more information about PET uses and benefits.

Clear, thermoformed PET without ink or labels is accepted for recycling throughout most of the US and Canada. Over 60% of US households also have non-bottle PET recycling available to them.

Packaging that is less than 2”x2”x2” or black in color is unlikely to be recovered at typical sorting facilities.

For the most accurate information, we recommend checking with your local municipality or waste hauler to see if PET is accepted in your community’s recycling program.
