PLA (Polylactic Acid)

Polylactic acid is a renewable bioplastic made from corn or sugarcane that can make up all or part of a product. Products made only of PLA tend to be commercially compostable. These products are marked by a “7” within a solid triangle – its resin identification code. This is usually found on or near the bottom of the product.

To create PLA, corn or sugarcane is harvested and then made into a stable, solid polymer. Dart uses the resulting PLA polymer as either a material in thermoformed food & beverage packaging or to coat certain paper products.


PLA can be commercially composted where facilities exist. Not suitable for backyard composting. Visit FindAComposter.com to find out if a commercial composting facility accepts PLA near you.

Access to PLA recycling is very limited at this time. For the most accurate information, we recommend checking with your local municipality or waste hauler to see if PLA is accepted in your community’s recycling program.

*May be recycled if you have access to a recycler that accepts paper cups. Such facilities may not exist in your area.
